tonite is a big night for okc sports fans...the very first professional game of the okc thunder.  it means nothing unless youre from here, grew up here, and never thought you would live to see the day.  i got tix for the whole family...i just hope we get national anthem serenaded by the holy trinity off oklahoma country music: garth brooks, tobie keith, and reba macintire. im just kidding, i dont want that to happen, despite the fact that it probably will.  the tobie keith half time show will sadly be missed. ill be in the thunder store getting an atrocious looking t-shirt. bring on thunderstruck...im pumped.

I saw the dark knight
i dreamed about it
i went to work and talked about it
now im writing about it
i think it was amazing
my friend greg and i, many years ago, would discuss films, and i would often go off on long tangents about a superhero movie that takes place in the real world. what happens when the hulk smashes up a block on main street? how much does that cost to repair? what would it really take for someone to became a masked vigilante? what kind of person would do that? what would it do to them? how could you have a supervillian be really frightening, be really dangerous? the hero is never really in peril, we know a sequel is coming...there is too much money to be made! unbreakable tackled some of these questions, and this summer, hancock started down that path as well before careening off the cliff. both are good movies, but the dark knight? the dark knight is a great movie. im not even sure how great a movie it is yet...but im leaning towards GREAT. like star wars GREAT. like indiana jones GREAT. whats the difference between those two and the dark knight? well, for one, the dark knight aint no kids movie. this is comic book movie for adults. i cant take my daughter to see this one, not when a formerly sympathetic character is holding a gun to a little boys head. how do you explain that one? im not gonna rehash all the superlatives. theyre out there, and they are all true...even many of the negative reviews are true. just about all the criticism of this movie (and there is not much, but some of it can be chalked up to nitpicking, "i liked keatonkilmerclooney better." "why is it so dark?" "its not cartoon-y enough." "its not very FUN.") most of it is true, its NOT a perfect movie, what movie is? citizen kane? no, this one gets more things right then any movie in this genre. hell, it gets more things right then movies of most any genre. this will be the one they talk about 20-30 years from now. theyve elevated the bar. iron man 2? youve been called out.
predictions:
nominations for
cinematography
editing
sound
screenplay
directing
acting
best picture
of these, im inclined to think screenplay will be the one im most rooting for. why? because among many other things, a large part of heath ledgers amazing performance can be originally attributed to the way the part is written. its like nolan said...jaws is scary, but i dont want to see a backstory. i dont want to know why jaws is jaws, i just want to see jaws do what jaws does. fucking eat people.
idk, i need to get some sleep
go to see it for the movie
stay for the jokers magic disappearing pencil trick.
its an eye opener
im out

-Beating Jaime twice in a row on the same game and hearing him complain about wanting to throw his controller through his SDTV

-mtvU shows up on my digital cable. When did this happen? You mean i can actually watch music videos? I feel like a kid again

this script is wonderfully bat-shit crazy. im only halfway through with it, ill finish the rest tonight, but prepare
for a popcorn art-house flick from qt. i remember reading the kiil bill script about a year before it was released
and being completely underwhelmed by it, as i was the movie, but this? this has amazing potential...so far.

i dont want to jump to any conclusions here without a further viewing, but
WALL-E is the best movie thats come out this year
and may be the best movie thats come out in recent years
and may make the short list of the best movies i have ever seen
its an absolutely magical film
* * *
preparing for daddy week
doing the laundry
cleaning and prepping her room
im sure we will see WALL-E, perhaps today
last week i picked her up early from school
took her to see indy jones
it made me salty eyed to watch her enjoyment of that
im the fool who will tear up at a good movie
though, more often then not, i tear up at a good movie trailer
because i find the idea of the movie,
what it could be,
to be more inspiring than the finished product
but its an absolute joy to see my daughter share the joy and excitement of film
i worry alot
i worry about her being taken away from me
it baffles me, that in this day and age
it still seems to be an explicit understanding that the mother will get custody
to hear stories of custody decisions
fathers getting 3 days out of every 2 weeks...at best
sends me into a panic

i used to be a big reader, but the last book i read was a massive and awesome bio of hemingway i got at the hemingway house when i was in key west. phew...that was a long time ago!
ok! alright! i read a harry potter book since then...but i didnt finish it!
so, im bored, and since school isnt in full upswing for me, its the perfect time to fill my head with words!
so im on amazon and im gonna grab some paperbacks, hopefully on the cheap, but im not exactly sure what to get.
last nite (night) i watched a christopher hitchens "god is not great" debate...intrigued, i figured id pick up his book, or something similiar.
perhaps something california-y? 8 weeks away from my trip to LA...
but, idk...any suggestions? i like cool stuff. haha
im always for reading books that i think may make me a better(smarter, at least in appearence) person, whatever that means...biographies,histories, theories on the universe and our place in it. but i also like a good a page turner.
but please...nothing depressing. not right now. i couldnt handle reading a catcher in the rye-type novel right now...
so, later today, ill order my books. yay. excited! books!

oh, and i defy anyone to listen to this song carlo and not be charmed by it. its by a band called el madmo, and they have a secret. one of their members is already famous! its a fun little track. i just got the cd. if anyone wants it ill post a link to it upon request ala oldskool eardrumkicks days.

i find myself up, at 130 am, eating slim jims and drinking mountain dew.
what is wrong with me?

i saw the incredible hulk
it was good
better than i thought, because i thought the trailer looked horrendous
and before i go on, let me just say something about the trailers that ran before the movie
hancock looks alright. ill see it.
but hellboy 2...?
we watched the original last week
by "we" i mean my daughter and i
she loves monsters
and i still dont think its that good of a movie
but it had alot of potential
and ron pearlman is fucking great
i just knew del toro would be upping the ante for the next installment
but either, i am wrong, or whomever cut that trailer did a horrible job
it does anything BUT instill an excitement in me to see it
im not gonna waste my time going into detail on all the problems i have with it, but...
let me just say...any trailer that takes you step by step through the 75% of the film is unimaginative
dont give me the movie in the fucking trailer
and how about a little build up in introducing hellboy himself in the trailer, huh?
dont just casually show him for the first time 30 seconds in!
and whats this movie with deniro and pacino
they finally make a movie together where they share more than 2 mins of screentime
and its this?!
dont get me wrong, it was just a trailer, it could be great
but they couldnt get scorsese?
it looks like a typical vigilante cop buddy movie
i hope it rises above my expectations
but the trailer for it didnt make me want to go to the theater and see it
perhaps a rental, but...
maybe when some reviews start coming in ill change my mind
but until then...?
however, ive been wrong before
which me brings me back full circle-
the incredible hulk
now, im not a big comic book fan
when i was a kid i had my share, but i was always disappointed by their brevity
" i payed my allowence for this?! i finished reading it in 5 fucking minutes!"
"what a jip!"
but i love movies
and i especially love movies that allow me to use my imagination and visit places that can never exist
and superhero/comic book movies do just that
so i can geek out over my fair share of marvel movies
keep em coming
but with that having been said, i never cared much for the hulk as a character
its just frankenstein
and never cared much for frankenstein
i never even saw ang lees version, just bits and pieces here and there
but what this movie does is give you almost everything you expect
serves it right up
its a movie ill be able to casually watch when it comes on tv down the road
and enjoy
but its far from special
or inspired
the absolute best thing about the movie is the potential that it fuels for further installments
with an assortment of marvel action heros all in the same film
someday...
edward norton is ok as banner, but he wouldnt have been my first choice
i used to LOVE liv tyler
but not for her acting
her skills in that department hit their high water mark in stealing beauty
tim blake nelson steals his scenes...briefly
all in all it was good mindless semi-fun
but it didnt reach very high
it played to expectations for what a hulk movie would be
and so thats all it does...
...be
and one more thing...
the trailer for the new coen brothers movie looks HILARIOUS
i think it may still only be viewable on itunes
or, at least the R rated version of the trailer was
check it
it looks good
and ill be taking my kiddo to see wall-e this weekend
i may even enjoy it
:)

my dads favorite comedian was george carlin. that fact is one of the few things i knew about my father. he passed away when i was very young.
i inherited his love for george carlin, initially to feel closer to a man i barely knew, but later, because carlin was just that good. the best in fact. im saddened by his passing more than i can adequately express right now.

"People I can do without. This is my list: guys in their fifties named "Skip." Anyone who pays for vaginal jelly with an Exxon credit card. An airline pilot who has on two different shoes. A proctologist with poor depth perception. A pimp who drives a Toyota Corolla. A gynecologist who wants my wife to have three or four drinks before the examination. Guys with a lot of small pins on their hats. Anyone who mentions Jesus more than three hundred times in a two-minute conversation. A dentist with blood in his hair. Any woman whose hobby is breast-feeding zoo animals. A funeral director who says "Hope to see you folks again real soon!" Girls who get drunk and throw up at breakfast. A man with only one lip. A Boy Scout master who owns a dildo shop. People who actually know the second verse to "The Star-Spangled Banner." Any lawyer who refers to the police as the "Federalies." A cross-eyed nun with a bullwhip and a bottle of gin! A brain surgeon with "Born to Lose" tattooed on his hands. Couples whose children's names all start with the same initials. A man in a hospital gown directing traffic. A waitress with a visible infection on her serving hand. People who have large gums and small teeth. Guys who wear the same underwear until it begins to cut off the circulation to their feet. And any man whose arm hair completely covers his wristwatch. All right, that's enough of that." - George Carlin

"I've begun worshipping the Sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the Sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, reflections at the park... the occasional skin cancer, but hey. There's no mystery, no one asks for money, I don't have to dress up, and there's no boring pageantry. But I don't pray to the sun - it wouldn't be polite to presume on our friendship. You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci." - George Carlink
